“As a type 2 diabetic, the challenge is always to keep the blood sugar down. I had weight loss surgery which resulted in a loss of 130 lbs. but my A1c was still around 7. Within two months of starting with SR Strength, my A1c had dropped to below 6. It has remained there for the past year with no other significant changes, just SR Strength training. 20 minutes a week…how easy is that?”

“I have had seven knee surgeries and had been unable to find an exercise program I could really stay with long enough to get results. Since coming to SR Strength a year ago, my core strength has improved dramatically. I can stand for longer periods of time due to greater quad strength. Not only do I get results, my improvement continues. My goal is to walk without assistance by the end of the year.”

In America today, stroke is the number 3 cause of death. For the individuals who survive them the road to recovery is difficult and often financially draining. For years scientists have been researching methods to help speed recovery from stroke, but many individuals never get the help they need. Often, people suffering from stroke must seek out their own sources for recovery. One such person is local businessperson Darryl Ellingson. Darryl was a nationally ranked sprinter at USC in southern California, and is no stranger to physical adversity. He started and sold his company, Ellingson and Jones Insurance, so he knows what it takes to succeed in business. Having a stroke however, presented him with a set of circumstances he was unfamiliar with.

He had his stroke in December of 2004. He lost much of his ability to function, which he slowly began to regain. As his speech and movement returned he was anxious to further the recovery of his strength, but no one knew where to send him. He was unsatisfied with his results and was becoming frustrated. Finally, a year after his stroke, he had a conversation with Wes Hardy, co-owner of Santa Rosa Strength. Darryl had coached Mr. Hardy in track years earlier, and was curious if Wes had any experience working with individuals recovering from stroke. What he discovered was a program that has been studied and proven to improve strength, flexibility, and balance in stroke sufferers called Progressive Resistance Exercise. This type of training has been recently endorsed be the American Stroke Association and is in use in research projects all over the country. “The challenge with new research is disseminating it to those who need it the most”, says Wes. “Many doctors that I have spoken with have never heard of this method, and therefore never refer patients to business such as ours.”

Darryl now sees Wes once a week for his strength training. His appointment takes less than an hour, and he is extremely satisfied with his results. When he started he was suffering from a frozen shoulder and was unable to lift his arm above his shoulder. His weakened condition worsened his balance causing him to fall several times. Darryl wanted to golf again but was unable to hit the ball more than 50 yards. But all of this has changed. “My movement, flexibility, and strength from these workouts is unbelievable”, Darryl says. “Last week I hit the golf ball 120 yards and I feel great” He can now extend his arm well above his shoulder and he is not falling down any more. When his workout was analyzed the results were startling. After 35 sessions his increases in resistance were as follows: 80% back strength, 90% chest press, 95% row, and an amazing 246% leg press. For more information ask your doctor about Progressive Resistance Exercise, or call the professionals at Santa Rosa Strength.
